Virtualbox For Mac 10.13: A Step-by-Step Tutorial on Setting Up and Using Oracle VM VirtualBox on Yo

I have a MacBook Pro (Late 2011) running macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 and am trying to install Virtual Box 5.2.18. However each time the installer fails. Googling has revealed this is a common issue to do with "App Installation Security".

Virtualbox For Mac 10.13

There are several software and operating system virtualization tools annd utilities that are made for MacOS and one of those is a FREE and open source software called VirtualBox. Virtualbox is a general purpose x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product from ORACLE that makes it possible to run almost any operating system on MacOS without having to reboot. It als has a free virtualbox extension pack that adds even more functionality and features to virtualbox such as virtual machine encryption, virtual machine remote access, and even external device pass through. Continue reading to learn how to install virtualbox 6.1 on MacOS 10.13.6 or newer and setup the virtualbox extension pack in 10 minutes or less..

In order to complete this tutorial successfully the following items are required. Please ensure to have these items available before taking implimentation action on this tutorial:1) A Mac computer running MacOS 10.13.6 High Sierra or newer2) Compare the checksum and install virtualbox on the Mac.3) An internet connection to download the virtualbox extension pack4) A MacOS administrator user account.

1) Open a web browser such as SAFARI or GOOGLE CHROME and go to the official virtualbox download page.2) Install VirtualBox on MacOS3) Open Virtualbox and install the virtualbox estension pack4) Check for virtualbox updates.

1) Click HERE to go to the official virtualbox download page for MacOS.On the VIRTUALBOX 6.1.xx PLATFORM PACKAGES heading click on the OSX HOSTS link then click on SAVE on the OPENING VIRTUAL 6.1.xx.dmg popup.

2) The next step is to compare the checksum of the VIRTUALBOX installation file thats you have just downloaded. This helps to verify the integrity of the file especially if you intend to use virtualbox in a production environment or if you have downloaded virtualbox at work and want to install it on a computer at home or at a remote location.

3) Next, go to the virtual box download page and just below the VIRTUALBOX 6.1.12 PLATFORM PACKAGES heading click on the SHA256 CHECKSUMS link. A page with all the checksums for the virtualbox 6.1.12 installation files will be displayed. Simply check if the SHA256 checksum that was returned on the MacOS terminal is the same as the one on the virtualbox website.

4) Open FINDER and go to the folder where the virtualbox.dmg file was downloaded to. Right click on the file and click on OPEN WITH > DISKIMAGEMOUNTER (DEFAULT) the double click on the VIRTUALBOX icon to open the VIRTUALBOX SETUP.

5) MacOS detects that the virtualbox package was downloaded directly from the internet and a popup message will be displayed warning you that you should only run programs from a trusted source, click on CONTINUE to proceed.

A popup message will be displayed and notify you of the action that you are about to take as well as a full explanation of what the virtualbox extension pack can do. Click on the INSTALL button to proceed.

11) It is recommended it always periodically check for and install virtualbox updates so as to get software fixes, software patches and new features. Virtualbox makes this process easy by providing a builtin software update check functionality.

I had these same issues installing VirtualBox 5.2 on an employees Mac running 10.13, via remote desktop. After trying all the things you've mentioned I kept googling, eventually finding this thread saying it's a screensharing issue.

here are the steps we came up with **NOTE: if you tried downloading or installing this a few times like i did you will want to first uninstall virtualbox using the virtualbox uninstall tool which you can find in the downloaded .dmg file. you will also want to eject virtualbox from your devices (in the left panel of finder). after that go ahead and follow these instructions:

For those using homebrew, run 'brew install caskroom/cask/virtualbox', which will fail the first time. Then go to System Preferences>Security & Privacy>General as described above, where, at the bottom, there should be a message about the software install being blocked. Click the 'Allow' button next to this message, then go back to your terminal. Run the homebrew command again and this time it will work.

So: As I read, Sierra has a new security feature that blocks some external programs. During virtualbox installations you can check Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. You will see that Oracle (virtualbox) is being blocked. So, what I did was:

To set up a virtualbox running Ubuntu Xenial 16.04 LTS on a Mac Host running macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, start by downloading the ubuntu image from While the image is downloading got to the virtualbox webpage at and download virtualbox 5.2.8 by selecting the Mac OS platform package.

After installing the virtualbox we can create a new virtual machine by pressing New. The process to setup a ubuntu virtual machine is quite self explaining and I will mention only some important steps. Just choose a name for example ubuntuBox. Virtualbox should automatically change the Type and Version.

Create a virtual hard disk and select VDI (VirtualBox Disk Image) file type because we will use this virtual machine exclusively with virtualbox and no other hypervisor aka virtual machien software, like parallels or vmm. Set the size to 50 GB. Less than 50 GB will probably work as well but ubuntu takes up around 10 GB and the size increases with installed updates and software like ROS. We choose Dynamically allocated disk type because it helps to keep the physical storage on the mac host small with less software installed.

The current VirtualBox only supports macOS 10.13.*, 10.14.*, and 10.15.* hosts. You will want to download version 5.2.44 which will support El Capitan, and also its extension pack. Consider that a Mac with at least 8GB and a faster (e.g. SSD) storage will be necessary to run VirtualBox and any guest operating system.

I am having difficulty upgrading from macOS High Sierra 10.13 to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 on Virtualbox. The upgrade appears to finish installing, but nothing changes. This update is needed for XCode 10 installation.

First, make sure that your system is compatible with macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. If the answer is Yes follow the steps below.1. Go to App store and Download macOS High Sierra latest version.2. After the download has completed then a window will appear that telling you to install.3. Follow the window instruction.Follow this guide if you hesitate.

Hello, i: Change the Video Memory Size to 128 MB from Virtual machine settings ii:Change operating system version from macOS 10.13 High Sierra (64-bit) or macOS 10.12 Sierra (64-bit) to just the Mac OS X (64-bit)

I have install mac OS Sierra 10.13 on my Pc windows 10. We require xcode on it but it tell require 10.13.4 version. when I try to update 10 10.13. 4. It restart after update and show me same version. kindly guide me how to upgrade Mac to 10.13.4. It very urgent.

I need Xcode to be installed on the virtual Mac, but it needs at least High Sierra 10.13.2. I tried to update it to 10.13.4 in the app store, but after restart I got the original 10.13.0. Any help could be a big one. Thx

Apple continuously enhanced the security of recent macOS versions and with High Sierra 10.13 it introduced a new feature that requires user approval before loading newly-installed third-party kernel extensions (KEXTs)

The reason why I have included the two Google Drive download links for you is that the (One Full) download link has the entire macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Final file from Apple as one 6GB file. So if you are alright with letting your computer run all night to download the 6GB file then you can go for this.

The (6 of 6) download link has the entire macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Final file as 6 separate 1GB files, so if your internet connection is pretty weak or if you just simply want to take your time and download one by one then you can go for this. ?

Hi, I have followed your instructions. After having added code to virtualbox, I restart virtual box. Then I clicked on start. A black screen shows up but nothing else. No fancy white codes or anything for that matter. Can you please help?Cheers

This is my first time, using virtualbox so excuse my stupidity, everything works fine mac loads etc but every time i run virtualbox mac has to be installed again is there anyway to save the state so when i run it picks up where i was previously without having to reinstall mac everytime

However, I have ran into problem when I start to run the guest macOS in virtualbox.I have found another source online with the .iso file for the installation.Except for the .iso file, I have done exactly all steps in the tutorial yet these kept prompting up to me..

For testing purposes, I have a VM in VirtualBox currently runnning macOS 10.12 Sierra. Now that macOS 10.13 High Sierra is in Beta, I wanted to upgrade my VM to this new release. However, this proved to be difficult with the usual ways. This blog post will describe how to upgrade a Sierra VM to High Sierra.

With the last command, the system should continue booting. After a short moment, the installer will turn up and begin to upgrade your system from macOS 10.12 Sierra to macOS 10.13 High Sierra. Now you will have to wait for the macOS Installer to finish, which may take a while.

These instructions were written for VirtualBox and macOS 10.13 Developer Beta before APFS became mandatory. As far as I know, the VirtualBox EFI BIOS still does not support APFS. Personally I switched to VMWare Fusion due to this.

Using VirtualBox 5.2.18. I had High Sierra 10.13.4 installed and working well, but 10.13.6 would not install from the App Store. I found this post when searching, and the steps listed worked first time. Thanks for the post! 2ff7e9595c
